New Jersey’s First and Only Elder Abuse Shelter

Elder abuse is a huge problem in the United States, with an estimated 2.5 million individuals affected each year.

Elder abuse is defined as the intentional or neglectful acts by a caregiver or trusted individual that lead to harm of a vulnerable elder. Abuse may be physical, sexual, financial, verbal, emotional or psychological – and can include neglect as well.

SeniorHaven is the first elder abuse shelter in New Jersey. It was opened on July 18, 2015 and was the twelfth such shelter in the entire US. It is now the 20th and it is our hope that other facilities will join the shelter movement as well.

SeniorHaven Provides:

  • Safe haven for individuals over 65 who are victims of abuse
  • A 90-120 day stay at the most appropriate Jewish Home Family or Spring Alliance partner facility
  • Discharge planning to the least restrictive alternative from the moment of admission
  • Medical care
  • Nursing care
  • Therapy
  • Nutrition services
  • Spiritual care
  • Social Services
  • Legal Assistance

Referrals to SeniorHaven may be made by calling 855-455-0555.

SeniorHaven does not accept self-referrals.

If the situation requires immediate attention call the police and Adult Protective Services, who can deal with extracting the victim and referring to SeniorHaven for shelter.

A major component of SeniorHaven is educational programs to raise awareness about elder abuse in the community. We have promotional items and educational materials available upon request.

Speakers on elder abuse prevention and warning signs are available and may be booked by calling 201-518-1176 or emailing [email protected].

My sister Maureen and I want to thank you and all the wonderful caregivers at Jewish Home.  Our mom has felt very welcomed, safe and cared for over the past 2 weeks.  She has also made some very good friends!

We appreciate everything all the good folks at AL have done for our mom. Mom felt so very welcomed during her time there. From the caregivers to nurses and everyone - very caring and encouraging. It is so good to have a relationship with you all for any future respite or other needs.

We tried hiring a health aide directly and ended up having to provide last-minute backup and support. The 24-hour on-call and nursing support makes an incredible difference.
